Complete Guide on Type of Different Poodles

One of the most popular dog breeds in Singapore (and worldwide) is undoubtedly the Poodle. They’re easily recognizable because of their fluffy and curly coats. They’re also known as one of the most intelligent breeds that are also friendly, loyal, and loving. Poodles are amazing companions that usually get along well with other dogs, people, and babies (as long as they are trained and socialised as pups!). They’re also one of the top picks for people who have fur allergies because they shed minimally. A poodle usually has a lifespan of about 10-18 years, depending on its type.

If you’re curious about Poodles and the types of Poodles there are, you’re in the right place! We’ll tell you all about how to distinguish each Poodle type to help you decide if you’re planning to get one.

A Short History of Poodle

Originating all the way from Germany, the Poodle was bred to wave through waters and help hunt for animals. As they grew in popularity across Europe over the years, they were turned into domesticated pets. In some places, they were also used as performers in circus shows  and participated in dog shows because of their quick-to-learn skills and talents.

As years passed, Poodle breeders wanted a small version of this breed, which eventually resulted in producing different types of Poodles in varying sizes and colours. Additionally, Poodles were also mated with other breeds to mix their personalities and produce cross-breeds.

1. Standard Poodle

The Standard Poodle is considered to be the original and largest Poodle type. Standard Poodle stand at an average of 15-23 inches above ground and weigh around 45-80 pounds as an adult. They are intelligent, energetic, easy to train, and brave. They move quickly, thanks to their athletic builds, and strive best when they get lots of playtime and activities are done with their owners. Likewise, they also make for great watchdogs because of their alert and protective nature, especially with their owners.

2. Moyen Poodle

Moyen Poodles are medium-sized poodles whose build is smaller than a standard, but bigger than toy and miniature ones. So, you could say they’re in the middle in terms of size. They stand at around 15-20 inches in height and weigh 15-40 pounds on average. Moyen Poodle is an energetic, affectionate, and attention-loving type of Poodle that loves to spend time with its owners. They are smart and obedient, so training is a breeze with them. They are filled with energy that can be burned off through daily exercises and playing with their owners.

3. Toy Poodle

Smart and adorable, Toy Poodle is one of the small versions of the Standard. It was one of the breeds that were popular among the aristocracy as well. At an average of 10 inches in height while weighing around 6 pounds, they are one of the ideal cuddling companions for owners at any age. Compared to other types of Poodles, Toy Poodles don’t have that much energy but are still smart, affectionate, and loyal. They enjoy games and activities that stimulate their curiosity while keeping them entertained.

4. Miniature Poodle

Standing a bit taller and weighing more than a Toy, Miniature Poodles are also a great small breed that has an average of 10-15 inches in height and 10-15 pounds in weight. They also are more energetic than Toy Poodles, so they enjoy going on adventures to explore new places and exercising with their owners. They also make for great lapdogs who are content to just chill with you. Similar to their predecessors, Miniature Poodles are also charming and quick-witted.

5. Teacup Poodle

The smallest and the latest type of Poodle is the Teacup Poodle! An adult Teacup Poodle stands at only an average of 9 inches while weighing 6 pounds. Teacup Poodle also inherits the great qualities of the other types of Poodles, such as being energetic, lovable, and fun to be around. However, they are known to be more susceptible to health and physical issues due to their tiny stature. So, make sure to play and handle them with care!

6. Poodle Mixes

Quickly rising in popularity and numbers, Poodle Mixes or “Doodles” are a type of Poodle that has been cross-bred with other breeds, typically with other small breeds, and breeds with hypoallergenic coats. They are considered a designer type of breed. They come in all shapes, sizes, colours, and appearances – depending on which dominant trait they inherit from their parents. Not only that, but they also come with varying personalities that they also inherit. One thing they all have in common is how loving and affectionate they all can be!

Some of the most popular Poodle Mix designer breeds in Singapore are Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle), Schnoodle (Schnauzer and Poodle), Yorkiepoo (Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle), Pomapoo (Pomeranian and Poodle), Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever and Poodle), Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle), and Shih Poo  (Shih Tzu and Poodle).
