Japanese Spitz Puppies History

They originated from German Spitz that was brought to Asia, specifically in Japan around the 20th century. A brief history of the German Spitz – they are considered as one of the oldest European dog breeds that are known to be friendly, adaptable, and loyal. After cross-breeding the German Spitz from several other Spitz breeds worldwide to get the desired traits, they were able to debut the Japanese Spitz in its pristine signature white coat. Once successfully bred, they were able to export them as an official breed in different countries until they were recognized by the national kennel club as official dog breeds.

Japanese Spitz Personality

The Japanese Spitz is an energetic bundle of fluff that’s always down to play and cuddle. You’ll find them always smiling and running around, just being happy around their owners. They strive under constant attention and do not do well when left alone to their own devices, since they are prone to also getting separation anxiety. It’s important to train them as puppies as well as get them proper socialization so they can continue to adapt well to other people and breeds around them. It’s easy to train them since they are also known to be attentive and obedient as long as the owner is consistent. They are extremely friendly; Japanese Spitz get along well with children and with fellow dogs. Aside from that, they make for great watchdogs that will instantly alert you once they detect strangers or unfamiliar noises. They will do what it takes to protect their owners, however, once you assure them that it is safe, they will calm down. Once a Japanese Spitz warms up to you, they love to be affectionate and be close to their owners. It is because of all personalities that come with them which makes them one of the popular breeds to get.

Japanese Spitz Size

They come in small statures, but their heights and weight vary depending on their origin. They usually range from 10 to 16 inches in height, with a weight averaging between 11 and 20 pounds. One thing to note is that they are typically bigger than Pomeranians when it comes to appearance and size.

They can be distinguished through their snow-white fur that covers the whole body, triangular upturned ears, long fluffy tail that’s curled inwards, and a long pointed snout.

How to Care Japanese Spitz Puppies: Grooming & Basic Needs

As with other dog breeds, Japanese Spitz require basic care. Their teeth should be brushed daily and their paws and ears should be checked regularly to prevent build up of dirt, gunk, and possible parasites or infection.

Japanese Spitz has low grooming needs and is easy to maintain since dirt and debris don’t stick to their thick mane or can be easily brushed off. Make sure to brush their fur once or twice a week to keep it looking neat without tangles or mats. Do take note that they shed twice a year, so keep an eye on that and be prepared to clean more fur than usual. During this time, you’ll want to brush their mane daily.

Japanese Spitz Common Health Condition / Training / Nutrition

Active and energetic, Japanese Spitz requires frequent moderate exercise. Make sure to have enough time to keep them moving, such as going on walks or runs, playing fetch, or tug of wars. They are quite agile creatures, so going for runs around parks will do them good and keep them happy. Take advantage of their high spirits by training them too! They pick up pretty quickly and are fast learners that will follow and obey your commands – as long as it’s consistent paired with treats they like.

For a Japanese Spitz’s diet, they require high-quality feeding formulated for small breeds. Although they are not picky eaters, make sure to correctly proportion their food to prevent overfeeding. Consult with your local veterinarian if you are unsure of their diet requirements.

They are considered to be one of the healthiest dog breeds, with a lifespan that lasts from 10 to 14 years. However, their breeds are prone to have patella luxation (kneecap dislocation) or osteoarthritis. They may also get runny eyes, which are quick to gently clean with warm water and a washcloth or cotton. Avoid bathing them too much since it can cause their skin to become dry and itchy.
