Chow Chow Highlights

In Singapore, the Chow Chow stands out with its regal appearance and distinctive traits. These dogs, known for their thick, fluffy coats and unique blue-black tongue, are a medium-sized breed that combines the allure of a lion-like mane with a broad spectrum of colours, including red, black, blue, cinnamon, and cream. Their independent and dignified nature makes them loyal companions, though they may not be as openly affectionate as other breeds.

Early socialisation is key for Chow Chows to develop a well-balanced personality, as they can be reserved around strangers. Regular grooming is essential to keep their luxurious coat in top condition, requiring weekly attention and more frequent care during shedding seasons. Despite being generally healthy, they are prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia and are more sensitive to heat due to their thick coats. With a life expectancy of 10-15 years, adopting a Chow Chow means committing to their special care needs, ensuring a rewarding companionship.

Chow Chow History

The Chow Chow holds the title of being one of the world’s oldest dog breeds, with roots stretching back around 2,000 years in China. Recognised for its robust structure, lush double coat, and unique blue-black or purple tongue, this breed stands out as a prime example of a basal breed, meaning it predates the development of more modern dog breeds. Historical records hint at the Chow Chow’s presence during the Han dynasty, emphasising its ancient lineage.

Throughout history, this distinguished breed has been linked to Chinese emperors and even mentioned in the accounts of Marco Polo. It made its way to the United Kingdom in the 1820s and was later introduced to the United States towards the end of the 19th century. Since then, the Chow Chow has gradually built up recognition, becoming a cherished breed in various parts of the world.

The Personality of Chow Chow

Personality-wise, Chow Chows are known for their dignified and somewhat aloof demeanour, often compared to the independent nature of a cat. Despite their reserved nature around strangers, they are deeply loyal and protective of their families. These dogs appreciate a calm environment and are more likely to form a close bond with one person. Early socialisation is key to helping them become well-adjusted adults, as they can be cautious with new faces and experiences. Their unique personality, which combines independence with loyalty, makes them excellent companions, setting them apart from the typical pet.

Chow Chow Size

As for size, Chow Chows are medium-sized dogs, standing at 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 40 to 70 pounds. They possess a sturdy, square frame covered in a dense double coat that can be either smooth or rough. Their solid build and noble stance reflect their ancient heritage as dogs of utility and beauty.

Caring for Chow Chow: Grooming & Basic Needs

Chow Chows, with their thick double coat, demand regular grooming to maintain their majestic appearance and overall health. Brushing them at least twice a week is essential to prevent matting and manage shedding. Their grooming routine should also include regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care to prevent common issues found in the breed.

Chow Chows are not fond of hot weather, so it’s important to keep them cool during warm days. Daily walks and mental stimulation are crucial, but due to their moderate energy levels, they don’t require excessive exercise. A secure space where they can move around safely is ideal, as they cherish their independence yet need to be part of family activities.

Chow Chow Common Health Conditions, Training, and Nutrition

Chow Chows are generally healthy but prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and eye problems such as entropion. Regular veterinary check-ups are vital to catch any issues early. They can be stubborn, making training a challenge, but with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, Chow Chows can learn and adapt well.

A secure area for exploration and family interaction supports their independence and social nature. Nutrition-wise, they thrive on a balanced diet tailored to their specific health needs, age, and activity level. Avoid overfeeding to prevent obesity, which can exacerbate health issues.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Puppy Care and Assessment

At Pretty Pets Kennel, we adopt a holistic approach to puppy care. Our Chow Chows undergo a comprehensive assessment process that covers their physical health, temperament, and behavioural tendencies. This process starts from the moment they are born, with regular vet check-ups and health screenings to ensure they are growing healthy and strong.

We understand the importance of early socialisation and training. Our program includes exposing them to various stimuli and environments, helping them become well-adjusted and confident. We assess each puppy’s personality, tailoring our training to suit their individual needs.
