Pembroke Welsh Corgi Highlights

Don’t let their short stubby legs fool you, chances are they can outrun you easily! The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a popular active and smart breed, usually known for its short stature, sturdy build, and fluffy butts. They love being around children and even other pets, especially if they are raised together. Eager to please, they are always willing to learn new tricks and are quick to pick up on cues as well. Pembroke Welsh Corgis love to love and are incredibly loyal to their owners; no matter the size of household or living space is, they can easily fit in and adapt to their surroundings.

Corgis are easy to groom as long as they are brushed frequently to lessen the shedding, tangling, and matting of their fur. Their small-medium-sized builds come with tons of energy that needs to be used daily through playing sessions or long walks. Aside from that, since Pembroke Welsh Corgis were originally bred to herd farm animals, you might find yourself, children, or other pets being herded by your own Corgi if they’re bored or not trained enough. Since they can be bossy, make sure they get the exercise they need daily and train them early to know who’s the boss in the house.

You’ll find yourself protected with these natural watchdogs as well. Despite their size, they have quite a big bark; Corgis will bark at anything, especially if they are faced with strangers, unfamiliar dogs, or if they hear strange noises around. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are full of personality, with a big dog attitude who are proud and loud. As long as you meet Corgi’s needs, you’ll find yourself with a loving and adorable companion.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi History

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was bred with its other dog variety, the Cardigan. Originally, they were registered in the Kennel Club of UK as the same breed. They were first seen back in the 10th century, originating from Wales where they were bred to herd livestock, protect the animals, and be a companion dog to the family. Later on, the Pembroke and the Cardigan Corgi were recognized as separate dog breeds. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was popularized because of the royalty’s love for them, specifically Queen Elizabeth II.

The easiest way to differentiate the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Corgi is by looking at the tails. The Pembroke has a short, stubby tail, while the Cardigan has a long, fluffy tail.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppies Personality

Strong-willed, loyal, and loving are the best traits to describe a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. You will usually find them happy and lively, especially when they’re around their owners. They love being around people, children, and other dogs as well. However, training and proper socialization are a must at an early age for them to behave in the presence of other people and other dogs. If not trained enough or given enough attention, they can be quite stubborn, which makes them bossy as well. As long as you are gentle with them, they will be gentle in return and would love to show affection in any way they can. Pembroke Welsh Corgis also love to please their owners and are greatly motivated to do well and impress their owners when food or treats are involved. They are quick learners and are easy to train. Lastly, since they tend to bark a lot (which can be tamed early on during training), they make for great watchdogs who will protect you and alert you of any suspicious behaviour.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Size

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is considered a dwarf-type of dog due to its size and shortened legs. The average size of this Corgi breed stands at 10-12 inches, and its weight ranges from 24 to 30 pounds. You will easily spot them with their long ears that are rounded and upright, fox-like features, short legs, and small, fluffy tails. Their coat consists of a single or a double or tricolour combination of the following: black, red, sable, fawn,  and white.

How to Care Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppies: Grooming & Basic Needs

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s body is surrounded by a double coat, with a thick undercoat and a longer topcoat. They shed heavily and continuously, usually twice a year. However, Pembrokes are easy to groom, and you can lessen the shedding issue by brushing their coat thoroughly, especially during heavy shedding seasons. It is also because of this that those with fur allergies might find this a problem if they decide to get this breed. Like with other dog breeds, bathe them as needed, brush their teeth two to three times a week, trim their nails once or twice a month, and clean their ears weekly.

Do take note that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is not an HDB-approved breed due to their insistent barking that may cause disturbance to your neighbours.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Common Health Condition / Training / Nutrition

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are generally healthy breeds, but some may get health conditions or diseases, which is why it’s important to always be up-to-date with your Corgi’s health records. The most common health issues consist of hip or elbow concerns, obesity, back difficulties, heart issues, and eye problems.

Another way to keep your Pembroke Welsh Corgi healthy is to watch its diet. Because they love it so much, they will eat just about anything you give them, which can lead to obesity! So, make sure you limit their treats, avoid table food, and give them the proper amount of daily food intake. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian for food proportion and nutrition recommendations.

Lastly, Pembroke Welsh Corgis are easy to train and are quick to pick up on new tricks and lessons. Motivate them by giving them treats, pets, and lots of praise. Aside from training, they have lots of energy to burn off, and giving them daily exercise for a minimum of an hour is required.
