About

Introduction to the Breed

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a popular breed known for its gentle temperament, affectionate nature, and their sociable, loving behaviour and adaptability—making them ideal companions for families and individuals.

Originally bred as lap dogs for King Charles II, they have a long history as beloved pets. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small to medium-sized breed, typically weighing between 5 to 8 kilograms and measuring 31 to 33 cm in height. This breed is generally considered apartment-friendly and is approved for HDB living in Singapore, making them a popular choice for urban dwellers.

Their small size allows them to adapt well to apartments or houses with yards! These are sensitive dogs that form strong bonds with their owners and do not enjoy being left alone for long periods.

Cavaliers typically do not display aggression, so they are well-suited for families and get along easily with other pets.

It's been 1.5 months since we got our Japanese Spitz puppy and she has been an absolute joy. Much thanks to Yvonne for answering all our questions and being so helpful in sharing information on caring for our little pup. She had a clean bill of health and came home healthy, energetic and quite well adjusted. After purchasing this little one, we still keep in touch with Yvonne and are grateful for the after sales support indeed. :)

Initially wanted to have a second thought but with the professional explanation. It left us with only 1 choice. Guess what? We got a new family member now…☺️🎊🎉

I got my family’s dream dog, a Papillion-Japanese spitz mix at Pretty Pet’s Kennel! I’m very grateful to Yvonne who introduced me to the designer mix dog. According to Google, it has better tolerance with Singapore’s humid heat vs Pomsky (or pure Japanese spitz). Pretty Pets Kennel designer mixes can be rare and have high visibility, so it’s important to secure them quickly if you really desire them. I’m lucky Yvonne kept me up to date on the sale this litter. ❤️ After I brought him back, Yvonne checked in daily for about 3 days to make sure the puppy was settling well and I was doing all the right things. I’m lucky that he is about 50% toilet trained from the moment I brought him in. Perhaps it’s also part of Pretty Pets structure that he is partly toilet trained. They also ethically check on some viruses before they release the pup.

We’ve had such a lovely experience with them, from the very first time we met Yvonne to even after Pebbles came home. We actually chanced upon this place quite randomly and very much on a whim. Our boy had very recently left us, and at the time we were simply looking around — not even specifically for another puppy. Yvonne was extremely warm and took the time to get to know us. When she found out that we had previously had a Japanese Spitz, she asked if we would like to have a look at the puppies. I don’t think we need to say much more after that. ❤️ Our puppy girl came home with us the following week. What really impressed us was seeing how well the furkids/babies were cared for. We know that, unfortunately, the conditions in these situations are not always ideal, so it was reassuring to see the care and attention given to the puppies. We were even able to interact with our puppy’s birth parents, which was something really special for us. The aftercare has been just as lovely. Yvonne continues to check in with us and follows up to make sure everything is alright, and she has always been there when we have questions or concerns. We really appreciate that the care didn’t simply stop once our puppy went home. There is probably never a “right” time to welcome another furkid after losing one. We certainly weren’t looking to replace our boy, and we know our hearts weren’t really prepared for another puppy so soon. But we are incredibly grateful for that one simple question that led us to meet our little puppy girl. Thank you, Yvonne, for bringing our little puppy girl into our lives. ❤️🐾

Jared has been extremely helpful and caring from the very beginning when we welcomed our Pomeranian, Kai, into our family. Although I have had dogs before, having a puppy is a new experience for our children, and there were many things for us to learn and adjust to together. Jared really went above and beyond. He even created a group chat to keep in touch with us, follow up on Kai’s daily progress, and make sure we were doing well and taking good care of him. Whenever we had questions or were unsure about something, he was always patient, responsive and ready to guide us. What we appreciate most is that his care didn’t stop after we brought Kai home. You can really feel that he genuinely cares about the puppies and wants them to settle happily into their new families. Thank you, Jared, for all your help, patience and care. You made welcoming Kai into our family such a smooth and reassuring experience. 🩵🐶 Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Characteristics of King Charles Spaniels

These dogs tend to be gentle and affectionate, and are eager to please, making them quick learners. Their friendly behaviour makes them well-suited for families and other pets, though their personalities may vary slightly from one dog to another.

Their coat is typically straight and silky, with feathered hair around the ears and legs that requires regular grooming to prevent matting. With droopy ears and expressive eyes, they have an endearing “sweet” face.
They are highly sociable dogs that thrive on human companionship, often suffering from separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. Early socialisation is critical for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels to prevent timidity.

Weighing 5-8 kg, they are perfect for city living but still enjoy outdoor play.

Size and Appearance of Cavalier King Charles

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a compact companion, slightly smaller than some other small dogs, standing about 30-33 cm tall. Their rounded head and expressive eyes give them a gentle, endearing look that is characteristic of the breed. Despite their size, they have a lively personality and a “sporty” nature.

Their coat is soft and silky, coming in four main colors: Blenheim, Tricolour, Ruby, and Black & Tan. The Cavalier’s tail is carried high and is often in constant motion, adding to their joyful and elegant appearance.

Life Expectancy and Health

These dogs have a life expectancy of approximately 10 to 15 years, which is typical for small to medium-sized dog breeds.

They are prone to certain health issues, such as mitral valve disease and obesity, which can be managed through regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and appropriate exercise. It’s important to watch for signs of common health issues, such as coughing, lethargy, or changes in appetite, so you can address any concerns early.

Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) is a leading cause of death in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, commonly developing by age five. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to monitor the health of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, including weight and eye care.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are prone to Syringomyelia, a neurological condition caused by a small skull size relative to the brain.

Responsible breeders aim for excellent health in their puppies by ensuring they are born to healthy parents and receive the necessary care from an early age. Puppies should always be health checked by a veterinarian before adoption or purchase to ensure they are free from hereditary or genetic health issues. (at Pretty Pets Kennel, we do blood tests for every litter of ours so you’re certain that your puppy is in good health!)

Exercise Requirements for a Healthy Lifestyle

Daily walks of about 30 minutes, coupled with playtime, are essential for maintaining their physical and mental health. They also enjoy activities like fetch and tug-of-war, which not only provide exercise but also strengthen the bond between dog and owner.

Training sessions should be gentle and positive, as they are sensitive dogs that respond well to affection and praise. They respond best to positive reinforcement training and can become fearful with harsh corrections.

It is recommended to avoid long walks during midday heat for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and limit outdoor activity to cooler times. This dog is highly prone to heatstroke and overheating due to their short muzzles and thick coats.

Nutrition and Diet for Cavalier King Charles Puppies

  • A balanced diet is vital for the health and development of Cavalier King Charles puppies, helping prevent obesity and related health issues.
  • Feeding them high-quality dog food, divided into 3-4 meals a day for puppies and 2 meals for adults, supports their growth and maintenance.
  • It’s essential to avoid toxic foods and ensure a gradual transition to new foods to prevent digestive upset.
  • Consulting with a veterinarian for personalised diet advice is recommended, as individual needs may vary based on age, health, and activity level.

Comparison to Other Breeds and Small Breeds

Compared to other small breeds, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands out for its gentle nature and adaptability, making them an ideal companion for many families.

For example, the Maltipoo is a crossbreed, created by crossing a Maltese with a Poodle, and also requires consistent grooming, but the Cavalier’s coat needs particular attention to keep it looking its best. They form strong bonds with owners and are affectionate, friendly with other dogs and animals when socialised early.

Their small size and moderate energy suit limited spaces, but they still need regular exercise and mental stimulation. When looking to buy a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Singapore, it’s important to choose a breeder that is AVS licensed and provides health guarantees for their puppies.

Living with Other Pets and Breeds

Bringing home a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel means welcoming a furry friend who is generally good with other pets, including cats and other dogs, especially if socialized from an early age. However, as with any breed, it’s crucial to monitor interactions and ensure that all pets have their own space and resources to prevent competition and stress.

Introducing your Cavalier to other animals in a controlled and gentle manner is key to ensuring a harmonious household. Their gentle nature makes them an excellent choice for homes with multiple pets, where they can thrive as part of a larger family.

Teaching your Cavalier tricks is a great way to stimulate them mentally and physically, and can also help them bond with other pets through shared play and training sessions.

With proper introduction and management, your furry friend can live happily alongside other pets, creating a loving and diverse family environment.

Family Dynamics and Children

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an excellent choice for families with children due to their patient, gentle, and affectionate nature. They are quick to form strong bonds with their humans, providing companionship and joy to children and adults alike.

Their small size and gentle disposition make them a safe choice for families with smaller children, teaching kids valuable lessons about responsibility and compassion. However, as with any dog, it’s essential to teach children how to interact with them gently and respectfully, ensuring a safe and happy environment for all.

Supervising interactions between dogs and young children is crucial to prevent any accidents or misunderstandings, promoting a harmonious family dynamic.

Cost and Pricing of Ownership

The cost of owning a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can vary, depending on factors such as the breeder, bloodline, living conditions, and location.

If you’re considering imported puppies, some Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in Singapore come from Australia, where strict health standards, ethical sourcing, and genetic testing are enforced to ensure quality. When choosing a breeder, it’s important to assess the living conditions to ensure the puppies are raised in a clean, healthy, and caring environment.

Prices for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies in Singapore can vary, but they typically range from SGD 2,500 to SGD 5,000 depending on the breeder and the puppy’s lineage. Initial costs include the purchase price of the puppy—which can range from a few thousand dollars—as well as expenses for spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping. (though this should already be done for you, like it is with our customers)

(All dogs in Singapore must be licensed with AVS through the PALS portal as of September 1, 2024.)

Conclusion on the Joy of Owning a CKC Dog

Owning a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can bring immense joy and companionship into your life, provided you are prepared to offer the necessary care and attention—even if it means learning a bit more about their unique needs.

For those willing to provide the love and care they deserve, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be a rewarding and loving companion, offering years of happiness and devotion.
